Firefighting Installation Materials Guide: How to Choose Fire Group Products?

A fire protection system isn’t something you “install and forget.” If the right equipment isn’t selected for the project, you can run into compatibility issues during installation, maintenance becomes harder during operation, and in the worst case the system performs inefficiently. That’s why knowing a few basic rules when choosing fire group products makes the job much easier.

In this article, I briefly and clearly summarize the most commonly used equipment in fire lines, the DN–PN logic in valve selection, and what components like check valves and strainers are used for.

What is a fire group? What do “fire group products” include?

A fire group is the general name for the equipment that controls flow and protects the line in a fire pipeline. Depending on the project, the following product groups typically stand out:

  • Valves (butterfly valve, gate valve, and in some applications ball valve)

  • Check valves (to prevent backflow)

  • Strainers / filters (to catch sediment and particles)

  • Connection components (flanged/threaded connections, adapters, etc.)

Valve selection in fire lines: Butterfly or gate?

There’s no single answer to “Which is the best?” In fire protection systems, the choice is usually based on these three factors:

  • Pipe size (DN)

  • Working pressure (PN)

  • Operational need (on-off use, maintenance convenience, installation type)

A general framework:

  • Butterfly valve: Can offer practical installation and a cost-effective solution in larger diameters.

  • Gate valve: Preferred in some projects and can offer advantages depending on the application.

For a clear decision, the DN/PN values and the connection type in the project are decisive.

What do DN and PN mean? Why are they important in fire systems?

  • DN: Indicates the pipe size (nominal diameter).

  • PN: Indicates the pressure rating of the valve/equipment.

Choosing the wrong PN in a fire line is a risk in terms of safety and equipment life. The wrong DN can cause installation incompatibility and flow issues. The most accurate method is to base the selection on the DN/PN values required by the project.

What does a check valve do?

A check valve prevents reverse flow. It is used to protect the line in places where backflow would cause problems, such as at the discharge of a fire pump. It is a critical component, especially for protecting the pump and equipment.

Is a strainer (filter) necessary?

A strainer protects equipment by trapping sediment and particles in the line. It’s especially preferred upstream of sensitive equipment and in lines where maintenance convenience is desired. When it’s skipped with “We’ll add it later,” it usually comes back as equipment failure and maintenance cost.

Flanged or threaded connection?

  • Flanged connection: Common in fire lines where secure connection and easy maintenance are required.

  • Threaded connection: Can be practical in smaller diameters.

The correct connection type should be selected according to the project and standards.

Ordering, delivery, and support

Same-day shipping is possible for in-stock products. For same-day shipping, orders must be submitted by 16:00. Hand delivery within Bursa is also available. If you share the DN/PN, connection type, and application area for the correct product selection, guidance can be provided quickly.

To explore fire group products:

Which valves are used most in fire lines? Butterfly valves, gate valves, and check valves are among the most commonly used equipment in fire lines.

How do I choose DN–PN? DN is the pipe size, PN is the pressure rating. The project values should be taken as the basis.
